Problem

A world-class supplier of stamped blanks and component assemblies came to us as the OEM for their Magna-Lock USA chuck on their Mattison rotary surface grinder. They were losing holding power and needed a fix to the issue to keep production running at 100%, with as little downtime as possible.

Diagnostics

Once the project was in-house at our Rockford, IL facility, our team ran diagnostic testing on the magnet to determine the full extent of the electrical issues. The issue was diagnosed as an insulation problem and shorted coils, causing the holding problem the customer was experiencing.

Digging deeper than just fixing the problem, we diagnosed the cause of the problem, something most repair shops can't do. The chuck, being held together with a limited amount of bolts, was not sealed properly, causing coolant to ingress into the coil cavity. Giving OEM recommendations on avoiding future repairs is something that should be a standard with large-capacity production partners should do.

Remedy

Our Magna-Lock USA OEM remedy was as follows:

  1. Full recoil of the magnetic chuck

  2. Waterproof interior of chuck to help avoid future need for repairs

  3. New socket head cap screws throughout the chuck to provide a tight seal between top plate and chuck body

  4. Sealing the hold-down through holes with silicone upon reinstallation to fully seal the remanufactured chuck

  5. Adding copper washers to the hold-down bolts, to further ensure a watertight seal to the interior.

Impact

The impact of this OEM remanufacture:

  1. Uptime - the customer was able to be back up and running 79% faster than if they purchased new

  2. Cost savings - remanufacturing this Magna-Lock USA chuck saved the customer nearly 80% from the cost of a new chuck.

  3. Two-year warranty - our standard two-year warranty on OEM remanufactures provides the customer peace of mind on their investment into keeping this chuck going on their Mattison grinder.
