How does temperature affect the performance of a magnetic chuck?

Temperature is a critical factor in magnetic workholding, affecting both the chuck's temporary holding power and its long-term integrity.

For Permanent Magnet Chucks: Excessive heat is dangerous because it can cause permanent demagnetization if the temperature approaches the material's Curie Point. While modern magnets are very stable, sustained high heat from the machining process can cause a permanent loss of holding force. Heat can also cause the chuck body to expand, reducing grinding accuracy.
For Electromagnetic Chucks: Heat is generated internally by the electrical coil. While this does not typically cause permanent demagnetization, excessive heat can cause a temporary drop in holding power and can severely limit the chuck’s duty cycle (the length of time it can be safely left on). Overheating can also degrade coil insulation, leading to internal failure.

Best Practice: Always use adequate coolant and avoid running high-amperage processes for extended periods without monitoring the chuck temperature.
