When is a Vacuum Chuck the better choice compared to a Magna-Vise for holding a non-magnetic part?
Both solutions are excellent for holding non-magnetic materials like aluminum and plastics on a magnetic machine base. The choice is based on the size and geometry of the part versus your production volume requirements.
Choose a Vacuum Chuck System if:
The part is large and/or thin: Vacuum provides uniform pressure across the entire surface area, preventing warpage or "dimpling" on thin, large sheets.
You require high volume/fast cycling: Vacuum allows for instant, single-action loading and unloading of parts, which is significantly faster than manually set up of a Magna-Vise.
You need full surface machining: The part is held on the bottom surface only, leaving all sides and the top open.
Choose a Magna-Vise if:
The part is small and thick: The vise's pinching action provides maximum rigidity for small, substantial parts that require aggressive machining.
You need to hold the part squared: The precision-ground vise guarantee the workpiece is held perfectly parallel and square.
The job is low-volume/job-shop based: The flexible setup is ideal for one-off or small-batch runs.
What is a "hybrid" workholding solution, and why would I need one?
A hybrid workholding solution is a custom-engineered fixture that combines two or more different workholding technologies to secure a workpiece for a specific machining operation. It is required when a single technology is insufficient to meet the precision, rigidity, or accessibility demands of a complex job.
Examples of Hybrid Solutions:
Magnetic + Vacuum: Used to hold a composite assembly where the frame is steel (held magnetically) but a thin plastic panel inside the frame requires vacuum holding for surface machining.
Magnetic + Mechanical Clamping: A fixture that uses magnetic force for primary hold-down, combined with small mechanical clamps or precision stops for secondary location and stabilization against extreme lateral forces.
Vacuum + Mechanical: Used for parts that are too heavy for pure vacuum alone but require the uniform, full-surface support that only vacuum can provide, supplementing the hold with external clamps.
By combining strengths, a hybrid fixture provides the maximum possible holding power and versatility for your most challenging parts.
How do I start the process for a custom or hybrid workholding quote?
Starting the process for a custom or hybrid solution is straightforward. Because these solutions are highly specialized, the most efficient way to get an accurate proposal is to provide our engineering team with the key details of your application upfront.
Follow these three steps to request your quote:
Gather Workpiece Data: Collect the necessary engineering data for the part(s) you need to hold. This must include CAD drawings (or detailed 2D prints), the specific material (e.g., 6061 Aluminum, H-13 Tool Steel), and its approximate weight.
Define the Operation: Clearly describe the machining process (e.g., "high-speed aluminum milling," "wet surface grinding," or "EDM"). Specify the machine tool you will be using and its table dimensions.
Contact Our Engineering Team: Submit your information directly to our dedicated engineering and sales team at sales@obsidianmfg.com or call us at 815-962-8700. We will review your requirements and provide an engineered proposal outlining the best hybrid solution for your needs.
